Possible Cure for Melanoma?

By    |   Wednesday, 08 April 2015 01:25 PM

Researchers at a Utah cancer institute say they are hot on the trail to a cure for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

Scientists at the Huntsman Cancer Institute are using mutated herpes viruses and injecting them directly into melanoma tumors to attack cancer cells, Fox News reports.

The treatment — a form of immunotherapy — essentially boosts the patient’s own immune defenses to fight cancer, using the herpes virus (which has been engineered to be benign) as a kind of Trojan-horse therapy.

To date, 25 percent of patients who have undergone the therapy have remained cancer free.
“The new treatment teaches the body to heal itself and 60 percent of the patients are seeing dramatic results,” said Robert Andtbacka, M.D., a surgeon oncologist at the Huntsman Cancer Institute said in a press release.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer and melanoma is the most severe — accounting for over 76 percent of cancer deaths each year.

The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2015, about 73,870 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in the United States.

People most at risk include those with fair skin, family history of melanoma, and excessive exposure to ultraviolet light.
