GOP Incumbent Comstock, Dem State Senator Win Va. Primaries in Key House Race

U.S. Rep. Barbara Comstock won the Republican primary in her northern Virginia district Tuesday, fending off a challenge on her right from Air Force veteran Shak Hill, who attacked the two-term incumbent as insufficiently conservative.

Comstock now has a battle in November's general election. She'll face state Sen. Jennifer Wexton, who won Tuesday's Democratic primary.

The race is seen as a tossup, and Democrats have targeted the seat as a battleground in their campaign to gain control of the House of Representatives.

The district stretches from the wealthy suburbs of McLean, inside the Capital Beltway, west to Winchester. Comstock won re-election in 2016 with 53 percent of the vote, but voters there supported Hillary Clinton in 2016 by a 10-point margin over Trump.

Comstock has kept her distance from President Donald Trump. In 2016, she urged him to drop out of the presidential race over his 2005 lewd comments about women - captured on an "Access Hollywood" microphone.

Hill had criticized Comstock for voting last year against a measure to repeal the 2010 Affordable Care Act.

With more than $3 million, Comstock outraised Hill by a factor of 13. Comstock launched a website titled shadyshak.com that labeled Hill as a "creepy candidate" who can't win in November. The website alleged Hill "liked" pornographic tweets and blogged about topics such as penis enlargement. Hill said an automated service mistakenly made the posts.

Six Democrats ran for the opportunity to unseat Comstock, including several who raised about $1 million or more. Wexton was the only elected official and the favorite after receiving the endorsement of Gov. Ralph Northam.

But several other candidates outraised or matched Wexton in fundraising. One competitor, Alison Friedman, committed $1 million of her money.
