Senators Warn of Foreign Social Media Meddling in US Vote

Tuesday, 08 October 2019 02:21 PM

A bipartisan group of U.S. senators is recommending the Trump administration form an interagency task force to monitor the use of social media platforms by foreign governments for signs of interference in elections.

The recommendation is in a report released Tuesday by the Senate intelligence committee, which has been investigating Russia's efforts to use social media to sow discord and influence the outcome of the 2016 election.

Lawmakers say the Russian effort was part of a "broader, sophisticated, and ongoing information warfare campaign" and that Russian activities increased rather than decreased following the 2016 election.

It's the second report released by the committee as part of its investigation into Russian interference. The first focused on efforts by Russians agents to target state and local election systems.
