Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and GOP rival Donald Trump are both viewed unfavorably, according to the latest Washington Post–ABC News tracking poll released Monday.

The results:

  • Clinton unfavorable: 59 percent;
  • Trump unfavorable: 59 percent.

Forty-seven percent of voters viewed both candidates as "strongly unfavorable."

While Clinton was viewed unfavorably, Trump was more unpopular than her, according to the poll For example, in May, Trump's unfavorable rating was at 69 percent while Clinton's was at 56 percent.

Trump's popularity appears to be on the upswing. In net favorable ratings — percent favorable minus percent unfavorable — Trump is at -22 and Clinton is at -21. Earlier this month, poll results showed Trump at -28 and Clinton at -17.

White men expressed more displeasure with Clinton than Trump. While an earlier poll showed Clinton at 32 percent favorable and 67 unfavorable, current poll results show a decline for the former secretary of state.

  • Clinton favorable: 24 percent;
  • Clinton unfavorable: 74 percent.

Independent voters are also seeing Trump in a less negative light:

  • Trump unfavorable: 58 percent;
  • Clinton unfavorable: 69 percent.

Voter preference is close:

  • Clinton: 46 percent;
  • Trump: 45 percent.

The poll showed little change based on the Oct. 28 announcement from FBI Director James Comey about reviewing additional emails from Clinton's time as secretary of state.

Trump had a 1-point lead over Clinton after the announcement, as well as the next day — 46 percent to 45 percent.

However, in the IBD/TIPP poll released Monday, Clinton has a 1-point lead over Trump — 45 percent to 44 percent.
