Trapped Congressman: 'We Have Never Seen Anything Like This'

(Fox News' "America's Newsroom")

Rep. Brian Babin, who told CNN on Wednesday he was trapped in his home northeast of Houston, said Thursday he has been able to get out now that the rains have subsided and the water has gone down some.

"Let me clarify something, I was not rescued, okay?" he told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." 'I was doing an interview with CNN, they said what do you see? I said lots of water, and as soon as it recedes, I will be able to get out, and that is exactly what happened, we had a little respite from the rain."

He said he was not in a life-threatening situation at all, and people across his district were "dealing with a lot worse, I can promise you that."

Babin told CNN's Jim Acosta on Wednesday he was "absolutely trapped in my house" in Tyler County, located northeast of Houston. The congressman said his family was with him in their home, located behind a creek that had flooded, blocking the home's exit.

The Republican congressman Thursday described his district, all nine counties as being like a "vast lake from Houston all the way to Louisiana."

"It is densely populated by people of all walks of life, all socioeconomic situations," Babin said. "Most of these folks have seen hurricanes before, but most of these people have never seen one like this before, we have never seen anything like this."

He continued he was born and raised in the congressional district he represents, and he has seen many hurricanes, dating back to the 1950s, but has not seen one like Harvey.

"We have a lot of work ahead of us," he said. "I can't be more proud of our first responders, or volunteers, from Louisiana and other states, just some great people who have come over to help us, and we now have an enormous job of cleaning up and rebuilding."

Babin said he spoke with Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, earlier Thursday about the federal response that will be needed, as the response will be "absolutely the most expensive and devastating" undertaken in American history.

But the people of Texas are tough and resilient, he continued, and have pulled together, and soon the ugly devastation pictures will be replaced by those of people who are rebuilding.
