Reince Priebus: Electorate Getting 'Comfortable' With Trump

GOP nominee Donald Trump has been on message and has been disciplined in recent weeks, and between that and the shakeup that brought in pollster Kellyanne Conway, the electorate is getting "comfortable" with his unorthodox campaign, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Thursday.

"First of all, the electorate wants to change," Priebus told Fox News "Fox & Friends" program. "Like a flowing river, you can analyze all the minutia all day long, but the electorate is like a river, it's flowing and wants change and Donald Trump fits the movement of the electorate and Hillary Clinton doesn't."

However, with Trump being a new candidate who has never before sought public office, "it takes time for the electorate to be convinced over time that this big change is something that they are comfortable with."

Trump, meanwhile, has had an "incredible four weeks," said Priebus, and "he has been disciplined."

"He's talking about serious policies at every single stop, whether it's a rally or a school or church," said the chairman. "People are getting comfortable, and just like in 1980 when the electorate wanted to change, it took time for the electorate to get comfortable.

"The other thing is look at the polls, he's over 45 percent, 46 percent, 47 percent, something that all the supposed experts said would never happen. Well, it's happening."

In addition, Conway has been successful where Trump's former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort was not, because now there is a more "sustained discipline," said Priebus.

"When you bring in someone new and that person is also disciplined and really a polling and messaging expert, and someone that he really listens to and respects," the results are seen in Trump's polling numbers, said Priebus.

"We all know Donald Trump likes the polls, at least he listens to the polling," said Priebus. "He reviews them. We all know that. Now the polls are affirming something that the team is saying is important to the campaign. It's also, I think, Donald Trump's comfortable with it."

Also, Trump wants to be "policy driven and giving these speeches, not because someone is pounding away in his ear," Priebus concluded. "That doesn't work that way with Donald Trump."
