CNN on Sunday curtly rebuked President Donald Trump's tweeted 28-second video of himself punching someone whose face is covered by the CNN logo, vowing the network "will keep doing our jobs" and telling Trump "he should start doing his."
"It is a sad day when the President of the United States encourages violence against reporters," a network spokesman said in a statement.
"Clearly, Sarah Huckabee Sanders lied when she said the President had never done so. Instead of preparing for his overseas trip, his first meeting with Vladimir Putin, dealing with North Korea and working on his health care bill, he is instead involved in juvenile behavior far below the dignity of his office. We will keep doing our jobs. He should start doing his."
CNN senior White House correspondent Jim Acosta blasted the president's tweet on Sunday, saying, "We have to stand up to this."
"I think we're at the stage where we have to try the other approach, which is: we have to stand up to this. We have to confront this and say that it's wrong," Acosta told anchor Fredricka Whitfield Sunday on "CNN Newsroom."
Acosta said he also feared Trump's continued attacks against the press could escalate into violence.
"My concern is that this kind of rhetoric, this kind of behavior is going to lead to a journalist being hurt," he said.
