Pompeo: Take Iran's US Spy Claims With 'Significant Grain of Salt'

By    |   Monday, 22 July 2019 08:16 AM

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, a former director of the CIA, said Monday he would "take with a significant grain of salt" Iran's claims to have arrested 17 nationals who are accused of being part of a spy network trained by the agency and that it plans to execute at least some of them.

"Having had the chance to lead that great organization, the Central Intelligence Agency, I would urge everyone who's reading that story, waking up, to understand the Iranian regime has a long history of lying," Pompeo told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "They lied about shooting down the American UAV, they lied in the last few days about where they took down this tanker. It's part of the nature of the ayatollah to lie to the world. I would take with a significant grain of salt any Iranian assertion about actions they have taken."

Meanwhile, there have been "many Americans" who have been detained in Iran, said Pompeo.

"There's a long list of Americans we're working to get home from the Republic of Iran," he said. "This is a nation that we've talked about before, for 40 years has behaved in ways that normal nations don't. You don't take other nation's citizens to hold as hostages for political gain. I think this is just further evidence of the outlaw nature of the Iranian regime."
