Jihadis are deadly and have declared war on the United States, and should be treated accordingly, and the suspect in Tuesday's deadly New York City bike trail attack that claimed eight lives and injured nearly a dozen more people should be treated as an enemy combatant, not tried as a criminal, retired Lt. Col. Oliver North said Wednesday,
"We are at war," North told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" program. "They declared war on us. We didn't start it; they did. The jihadis are deadly and we need to treat them accordingly."
Terror suspect Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov was hospitalized for gunshot wounds sustained after he drove a pickup truck that he'd rented from a nearby Home Depot nearly a mile on a bike trail in Manhattan, killing eight people and seriously injuring a dozen more.
After he finally crashed the rental truck into a school bus, Saipov got out of the vehicle with two imitation guns, shouting, "Allahu Akbar", or "God is Great," in Arabic. A note was reportedly found in the truck, with the driver saying he committed the rampage in the name of ISIS. Officials said Saipov had followed instructions that have been put online by the radical Islamist terrorist group.
North said he believes Saipov, who reportedly is bragging to others about his exploits, should be treated as an enemy combatant, not as a law breaker.
"There is plenty of evidence what this guy did," said North. "Rented a truck, fingerprints, witnesses, all that stuff is there. They don't need a Miranda warning. We need to collect as much information as we can. Most of these guys are dead and we don't get intelligence from them. This is a treasure trove."
Meanwhile, it doesn't matter what "trade name" such terrorists use, North told Fox News.
"The president mentioned ISIS specifically in that tweet," he said. "The trade name, al-Qaida, ISIS, Boko Haram, they're all radical Islamist jihadi franchises from hell."
All of the jihadist groups have a common goal, he added.
"Death to Christians, Jews, Americans, Israelis, to them we're all infidels who deserve to die," said North. "They're all equal opportunity murderers and use whatever device they can. I caution everybody to remember, this is not an existential affront to our country. This is a distraction to a certain extent."
North also warned that section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act is set to expire at the end of the year, and needs to be reauthorized "so we can track what these people are doing when they talk to people overseas."
North said he wants to know why the United States is taking so long to enact President Donald Trump's call to protect the nation's borders and to allow extreme vetting of immigrants, as "that's brilliant."
"[Sen.] Lindsey Graham wants to designate jihadis like enemy combatants," he added. "They should be."
Most of the time, North said, people like Saipov, who wage such attacks, "can't build an LED light bulb, but they can turn one into a hand grenade. They couldn't build an airplane but they can build a five-pound bomb to blow an airliner out of the sky. We need to act accordingly."
