Sen. Jeff Flake said former President Barack Obama called him after the Wednesday shooting at the Republican baseball practice, according to Politico.

The Arizona Republican was on the ballfield in Alexandria, Va., when the shooter attacked, wounding House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., two U.S. Capitol police officers, and a congressional aide. Flake was not hurt in the attack.

Flake flew out to Arizona in 2011 with Obama after former Arizonia Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, was wounded in a shooting, Politico reported.

"This is particularly raw for those of us in Arizona," Flake told reporters about the shooting. The senator said Obama asked him to tell Scalise he was thinking about him.

A person familiar with the call told Politico that Obama did not call any other lawmaker besides Flake, and the two focused only on Scalise's condition, and did not discuss gun control or other issues.

A spokesman for Obama confirmed he made the call.

"He just said, 'I hope that this does bring more unity,'" Flake said, according to CBS News.

The annual charity baseball game between Republicans and Democrats will happen as planned Thursday, CNN reports.
