A series of fake tweets using an unverified Twitter account purporting to be Gen. Michael Flynn's was picked up by major news outlets, including The New York Times, early Tuesday.

In one tweet, the supposed Flynn, who resigned Monday night as President Donald Trump's national security adviser, suggested he was angry about becoming a "scapegoat."

It was a far cry from his scripted resignation, tendered Monday, in which he referenced sincere apologies and ended with Trump's rally cry of "Make America Great Again."

The New York Times and other outlets revised their reports after  realizing the account was unverified and recently established.

Flynn, embattled from nearly the beginning of Trump's presidency, admitted he held numerous calls with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. during the transition and gave "incomplete information" about those discussions to Vice President Mike Pence.

Pence initially defended Flynn, saying the national security adviser had not discussed sanctions with the Russians.
