Hillary Clinton addressed Donald Trump's comments about her on Wednesday, saying the words coming from presidents or presidential candidates have consequences.

Speaking to supporters in Des Moines, Iowa, the Democratic presidential nominee pointed out what she said is the critical difference between her and her Republican opponent.

"Words matter, my friends," she said. "Yesterday we witnessed the latest in a long line of casual comments by Donald Trump that crossed the line."

Trump on Tuesday told supporters in North Carolina that Clinton wants to take away their Second Amendment gun rights by appointing judges that would weaken the Constitution's guarantees.

"By the way, if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do folks," Trump said. "Though the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don't know."

That comment was immediately slammed by critics on the left, and some on the right, as a call for Clinton to be assassinated — even if it was intended as a joke. Trump and his campaign have said he was not talking about violence against his opponent, but only saying that Second Amendment supporters would unite to vote against her.

But Clinton herself compared Trump's comments to his attacks on the Gold Star parents of a Muslim American Army captain who died in the Iraq War, and "his casual suggestion that more countries should have nuclear weapons.

"Every single one of these incidents shows us that Donald Trump simply does not have the temperament to be president and commander in chief of the United States," she said.
