Those in the Republican establishment vowing not to support Donald Trump if he win's the party's nomination are being "insane and irresponsible," says Herman Cain, a presidential candidate in 2012.
"I think they ought to stand back and get over it," Cain said Wednesday on Fox News Channel's
"Your World with Neil Cavuto."
"Support whoever the nominee is, is what the mantra ought to be for the Republicans."
The American people are making a strong statement by supporting Trump in the early primaries, Cain said, and one of the reasons the GOP has had to do damage control over the past several years is because it is not listening to the people.
Cain said he disagrees with calls for Trump – or any of the candidates – to release their tax returns, and said he was disappointed in 2012 nominee
Mitt Romney throwing a "grenade" to create controversy over Trump's taxes.
"It would give all of the na-na-na-na-na naysayers out there more stuff to go after, to continue to throw stuff into the wind."
Four months ago, many in the establishment expected Trump to "flame out," Cain said.
"Well, he didn't," Cain said. "Now they are panicking. So now they are saying, some of them, … they won't even support him if he's the nominee. That will be the death of the Republican Party."
