Donald Trump's attacks on the Vietnam War record of Arizona Sen. John McCain caused his favorability ratings to slip in the latest weekly Gallup poll, leading former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush to clip him by just a point among his three most vocal GOP presidential critics.

Trump's image, however, remains high among Republicans in the latest poll, Gallup said Thursday.

Fifty-one percent of GOP respondents rated Trump favorably in the latest poll. That compared with 59 percent the previous week and 53 percent two weeks ago, Gallup said.

The recent weekly survey was conducted between July 22 and Tuesday. It has a margin of error of 4 percent. Gallup started tracking all 2016 candidates, from both parties, on July 8.

Bush, however, edged Trump — finishing at 52 percent. The week prior, he was at 55 percent and at 54 percent the previous week.

"The fact that Trump not only survived the firestorm that erupted in June over his immigration comments, but initially thrived on it, suggests that he has staying power in the GOP race," Gallup said in its analysis of the results.

Overall, however, Trump has only a 31 percent favorability rating among all respondents in the Gallup poll, compared with a 57 percent negative one.

The developer slammed McCain's war record after the senator described Trump supporters at a July 11 rally in Phoenix as "crazies."

Trump's other most vocal critics in the GOP race have been South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

Among Republicans in the Gallup poll, 48 percent ranked Perry favorably in the latest week, compared with 52 percent the previous week and 49 percent the week prior.

With Graham, his favorability stood at 25 percent, vs. 30 percent and 29 percent, according to Gallup.
