Former Sen. Al D'Amato on Sunday compared Donald Trump's presidential campaign to that of Ronald Reagan in 1980.
"I think Trump has a movement that's picking up steam," the New York Republican said on "
The Cats Roundtable" on AM 970 in New York.
Trump was "brilliant" in inviting two of his rivals, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, to his veterans fundraiser that he held as a counter to the Republican debate he skipped, D'Amato. Huckabee and Santorum won the last two Iowa caucuses, providing a photo op of Trump standing beside them.
As for the debate, "the big winner was Donald Trump," D'Amato told host John Catsimatidis. "He demonstrated that he's not going to be pushed around ... He's going to stand up for America."
Speaking about the probe of Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton's emails, D'Amato said that if the FBI finds criminality but the Justice Department refuses to indict, "I think [FBI officials] would be prepared to resign."
In the campaign against her main rival, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, D'Amato said Clinton looks more like "an actress" reciting her lines, while Sanders appears "sincere" in his beliefs.
