Front-runner Donald Trump is increasing his lead in Iowa, as is Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, where the GOP voters will be first to vote in the GOP caucuses on February 1.
A new CNN/ORC poll has Trump up 8 points and Cruz up 9 from the October poll, while Ben Carson has fallen from his second-place position.
- Donald Trump: 33 percent (up 8)
- Ted Cruz: 20 percent (up 9)
- Ben Carson: 16 percent (down 7)
- Marco Rubio: 11 percent (down 2)
- Jeb Bush: 4 percent (down 1)
- Carly Fiorina: 3 percent (down 1)
- Rand Paul: 3 percent (up 1)
- Chris Christie: 2 percent (down 1)
- Mike Huckabee: 2 percent (unchanged)
- John Kasich: 1 percent (down 1)
- Rick Santorum: 1 percent (up slightly)
- Jim Gilmore: Less than 1 percent (unchanged)
- Lindsey Graham: Less than 1 percent (down 2)
- George Pataki: Less than 1 percent (unchanged)
CNN.com noted that the poll differs from a
Monmouth University poll also released on Monday that shows Cruz leading. Monmouth polled people who have previously voted in Iowa elections, while CNN/ORC interviewed people who say they intend to participate in February's caucuses.
But even in the CNN/ORC poll, Trump led among those who say they voted in the most recent elections they were eligible to vote in.
As for the Democrats, CNN/ORC's poll showed Hillary Clinton still in a commanding lead in Iowa.
- Hillary Clinton: 54 percent
- Bernie Sanders: 36 percent
- Martin O'Malley: 4 percent
The poll was conducted November 28 to December 6 with 2,003 adult Iowans. It included 552 likely Republican presidential caucus goers and 442 likely Democratic presidential caucus goers. Democratic results have a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 points. Republican results have a margin of error of plus or minus 4 points.
