Dylann Roof, the 21-year-old white man charged with killing nine black church members at a Bible study last week, tried to kill himself but had ran out of bullets,
ABC News quotes the son of a victim as saying.
Roof is charged with entering historically black Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C., Wednesday night and opening fire, killing pastor and state Sen. Clementa Pinckney first, according to the man ABC spoke with, then firing randomly at others in the Bible study.
Roof told one woman he was leaving her alive so she could tell the public he had committed the killings because black people are "raping our women" and "taking over our country."
Kevin Singleton's mother, Myra Thompson, was among those killed. He told ABC he spoke with a survivor of the shooting who told him Roof put the gun to his own head at the end of the violence and pulled the trigger.
"He put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger but there was just no bullets left," Singleton told ABC. "I'm assuming he wanted to take his own life."
