Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was criticized for glowing comments he made of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro after Castro's death was reported late Friday.

"I know my father was very proud to call him a friend, and I had the opportunity to meet Fidel when my father passed away," Trudeau wrote. "It was also a real honor to meet his three sons and his brother President Raúl Castro during my recent visit to Cuba. On behalf of all Canadians, Sophie and I offer our deepest condolences to the family, friends and many, many supporters of Mr. Castro. We join the people of Cuba today in mourning the loss of this remarkable leader."

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., called Trudeau's statement embarrassing, while Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said it was "disgraceful."

In an earlier Facebook post, Cruz, whose father Rafael left Cuba in the 1950s and opposed Castro, wrote Americans needed to honor the Cubans who resisted and fought Castro's communist regime.
