Liberal comic Bill Maher is a Bernie Sanders supporter, though he could live with a Hillary Clinton presidency, too.
But the host of HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" writes in
The Hollywood Reporter that Democrats risk losing the White House in November over one issue: refusing to use the term "Islamic terrorism."
Maher says in his essay he is not anti-Islam and he abhors Republican front-runner Donald Trump's call for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States.
"Donald Trump is not right — but he will win the election if the American people have to choose between his demagoguery and a party that won't even say the words 'Islamic terrorism,'" Maher writes. "I think the Democrats could lose on that issue alone, especially if there's another attack."
Maher noted that 40 countries have some version of Islamic Sharia law, and said he is mystified why liberals feel no need to oppose it.
"I just don't understand how liberals who fought the battle for civil rights in the '60s, fought against apartheid in the '80s, can then just simply ignore Sharia law in 40 countries," he said. "Apartheid was only in one. I am not anti-Muslim and never have been: I am anti-bad ideas. Killing cartoonists and apostates, these are terrible ideas and practices, and it would be lovely to think that they were confined only to terrorists. They unfortunately are not."
