Despite all the media hype, the coronavirus is not as bad as it is made out to be.
Should you be infected, the symptoms you will experience are similar to a bad cold: fever, shortness of breath, and coughing.
Since there is no anti-viral medicine available, you will have to stay in bed for about two weeks and let your own immune system fight the virus. You feel fine thereafter unless you belong to an older age group, or if you have a damaged or weakened immune system, in which case you could develop bacterial pneumonia — which can be deadly.
In the United States this includes about 1 in 100 infected patients.
As has happened in past pandemics, infections start out of nowhere, reach a maximum and thereafter disappear suddenly.
We can see this already in China where the coronavirus first appeared around Jan. 22, of this year.
The epidemic reached a high point on Feb. 12 with 15% of new cases per day, then falling off suddenly to a rate of increase of less than1% after March 7.
We see a similar picture in Italy, where the infections commenced around February 15, and experienced a high point on March 15 with about 3500 new cases per day.
Indications are that the rate of increases in new cases will decrease thereafter.
Here in the U.S. infections began around Feb. 15, 2020 and we seem to have reached a high point around March 17 with 7444 new cases (one in 44,000 U.S. citizens).
Since we started with the infections about 3 weeks behind China, our highpoint therefore would have been around March 15 (not too far off from March 16). Using ia similar logic, we could expect a low rate approaching zero at the beginning of April 2020.
Let’s all hope so.
