Once there were an estimated 30,000 of them.
The Christians of Mosul in Iraq are now gone.
They know the time had come to depart or to suffer harm. The new rulers, murderous thugs who call themselves the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) told Christians, who had lived in that part of the world since near to the time of Jesus, to leave.
Even the often morally blinded United Nations issued a report noting the facts: ISIS is killing or expelling Christians and other smaller religious sects.
Why? ISIS wants to make their territory Christian-free.
ISIS soldiers pull over the cars containing fleeing members of religious sects and do what they are know how to do. They kill them.
ISIS zealotry has resulted thus far in the destruction of the tomb believed to contain the remains of Jonah the prophet and the bombing of places where prostitutes practice their profession.
The ISIS new twists: make sure the occupants are at work at the time the explosion occurs.
Mannequins faces are now covered and it is no false conclusion to believe that the future of women in ISIS-controlled territory will be brutal, demeaning, at the whim of men and often shortened by violence.
Christians are not welcome in much of the Islamic world. Expulsions and persecutions are not new, but certainly under-reported. Murders of churchgoers as they leave house of sanctuaries has been occurring for some time.
What is astounding however, is the silence.
Yes, there are news stories here and there. But there is a general silence. There are no protests, no government resolutions and no sanctions against those who murder others who do not share the same religious beliefs.
It is state-sanctioned homicide for the crime of a different belief in the Almighty, and the punishment by the world at large is silence as these crimes are committed.
The West is making a terrible mistake by its silence, its failure to condemn these attacks on religious freedom and the murder and expulsion of those who choose to believe.
Maybe this hardly heard reaction, which seems to have no outrage with it, is another step in Western historical failure to understand that the abolition of religious freedom has often been a factor leading to the deaths of millions. Maybe the Western world has amnesia when it comes to its own history, and maybe the intellectual stream that has dictated our morality by saying religion is the problem itself has won this skirmish.
However, the victims are losing not only their homes as they often are murdered, tried and convicted by automatic weapon for the crime of belief.
The smug reaction of silence is one for which we will pay. Not because there will be a predictable heavenly response. No. That would be all too easy to dismiss. The price will be paid because we are allowing by our silence demons to run large portions of this planet.
It has happened before.
Once the beast awakens, his hunger often cannot be extinguished.
That is what demons do.
They will travel anywhere to feed. That is our problem, not theirs.
