Democrats Have Made 'Impeachment' Just Another Meaningless Buzzword

No matter how much you crane on Ukraine, it’s impossible to see whether impeachment will produce fruit. But as Democrats should have learned from the red-herring probe of Russians, rushin’ to a conclusion can be a bear. If not careful, their nuclear option could mushroom out of control and make their 2020 prospects more radioactive than Chernobyl.

Based on what we know, the Ukrainian-Biden-quid-pro-quo-impeachment fiasco is a joke, the latest charade of a Democratic Party desperately seeking relevance.

The issue is a call between President Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky. Mr. Trump asked his counterpart to investigate possible corruption related to Burisma Holdings (Ukraine’s largest natural gas company), and Hunter Biden (son of current Democratic co-frontrunner, Joe Biden), who sat on Burisma’s Board of Directors, earning a reported $50,000 per month while his father was Vice President.

Critics claim that Mr. Trump employed “quid-pro-quo,” threatening to withhold military aid unless his request was heeded. They also allege that Mr. Trump was seeking foreign assistance for his re-election.

Yet House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called for the impeachment inquiry before, yes before, obtaining the transcript, knowing what was discussed, or interviewing witnesses. How such blatant political bias has escaped larger scrutiny is incomprehensible.

Truth is, many people don’t care. When most Americans hear “Mr. Zelensky,” they think of Dan Aykroyd’s character in “Tommy Boy” — not the Ukrainian President.

We are living in the fastest-paced time in history, with information available 24/7. That deluge is so massive that most can only comprehend a few things, and for limited duration. This issue will soon be replaced by the next “breaking news du jour” story, as something fresh is always vying for our attention.

The Democrats, however, will attempt to draw it out by demanding side investigations and delving into everything else Mr. Trump has “done wrong,” but it will likely backfire as few tune in, giving the president a distinct advantage.

America loves an underdog, and there is a strong undercurrent that President Trump is being treated unfairly. People think he deserves the chance to do his job free from harassment, and this latest derailment attempt will be met with scorn.

From Day One, Democrats have been screaming “dump Trump.” Akin to "The Boy Who Cried Wolf," the Left has been so belligerent in demanding impeachment, for the most ridiculous of reasons, that few now take such calls seriously. Many of these same people have also been demanding Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh be impeached. The result, ironically, is that “impeachment” has become just another buzzword, having lost all its panache.

The Left’s core problem is that it remains shell-shocked that “deplorable” Donald Trump won the race “guaranteed” to be a victory for Democrats.

But a funny thing happened. America held an election, not a coronation. And the people — not the Washington Establishment — chose their next leader. Utterly humiliated, the Left’s only way forward was to discredit Donald Trump. And they continue to try, day after day, year after year. First, ignoring the time-honored Electoral College, many claimed the Trump presidency was illegitimate because Hillary won the popular vote. Then they blamed Russian interference, even though that election was conducted under the Obama Administration’s watch.

Next, they invented the “Comey-obstruction” and “Russia-Trump-collusion” issues and demanded an independent investigation. They got it, and once again, were floored by the outcome. Enter the last-ditch impeachment issue, as it might be their last chance at wounding the president’s political viability before 2020.

But not all Democrats abhor Mr. Trump, since every presidential candidate is grateful for the media spotlight now focused on Hunter and Joe Biden. Questions are swirling as to why the son of a sitting VP, who was dishonorably discharged from the Navy Reserve for drug use, and with no relevant experience in the Ukrainian gas industry, was sitting on the Board of a company accused of corruption, and at such an obscene salary. And why Vice President Biden issued his own quid pro quo by demanding that the prosecutor investigating Burisma be fired, or else America’s billion-dollar loan guarantee would be revoked. And how he had “no idea” of Hunter’s super-lucrative Ukrainian dealings.

Just because something may be politically advantageous doesn’t mean it isn’t true. Why did Mr. Trump ask now, during Mr. Biden’s candidacy? Maybe because the new Ukrainian President is more trustworthy than the prior, pro-Russian regime. Or maybe the same people in the FBI who illegally worked against President Trump were the ones in charge of investigating Ukrainian corruption.

This is not to excuse the president if he had nefarious intentions, but there’s no way to prove that he did. Barring a true bombshell, the impeachment proceedings may prove decisive in preventing Democrats from retaking the White House.
