Elections are supposed to have consequences. For example, Donald Trump’s election was supposed to result in a draining of the bipartisan establishment morass he derided as the “swamp,” addressing the immigration crisis — including building the "wall" — and accurately identifying and defeating our Shariah-supremacist enemies.
Yesterday’s balloting in Virginia is much more likely to be consequential in all three areas.
Official Washington will interpret the Democrats’ triumph there as a mandate for more swamp, no wall, and more willful blindness regarding the Muslim Brothehood’s penetration, infrastructure, and operations in this country.
The first test will be how the Senate treats Kirstjen Nielsen’s nomination to be the next Homeland Security secretary. After all, she seems aligned with that decidedly un-Trumpian agenda. Post-Virginia, even GOP senators seem unlikely to pursue the course-corrections promised and so desperately needed at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Neither will Ms. Nielsen.
