It was Russian hackers that exposed the Debbie Wasserman-Shultz emails.  They deliberately released them just ahead of the Democratic National Convention in order to help Donald Trump.  That’s what many pundits, Democratic Party officials and the Clinton campaign itself are currently saying.

While this sounds conspiratorial, I’ll say up front that I have absolutely no idea whether it’s true or not. But if the Russians are indeed behind this, the situation brings into the light a problem far more ominous than the current Wasserman-Shultz fandango.  It raises the very real possibility of black mail by a hostile foreign power or entity against a President Clinton.

The case is being made that Russians’ not only hacked the DNC computers but were willing to use compromising information found for their own political ends.  This potential situation underscores the tremendous risk Hillary exposed this country to by emailing national secrets on an unsecured server.

But national secrets aside, what about the 30,000 or so emails the Clinton people deleted?
Suppose those emails aren’t just about wedding plans and yoga classes as Hillary claimed.

There could be incredibly damning information or a “smoking gun” in those emails and the Russians or Chinese, or somebody else might have them.

Imagine a foreign power dangling the threat of exposing damaging information that could even amount to an impeachable offense over the head of our President.  The Russians could tell Hillary to pull back NATO or else.  Iran could compel her to allow an aggression or face dire political consequences at home.

A President Clinton could be faced with a moral and ethical dilemma of whether to “play ball” with a hostile power or face political ruin.  I wonder how she would choose.

I don’t know what actually happened with the recent DNC email releases.  If the Russians are really behind this, than the truth is the truth.  I don’t fault anyone for stating the truth.

But if I were part of the Clinton campaign I wouldn’t be in any hurry to offer an excuse that’s actually more damaging than the crime it is attempting to explain.
