Smithfield Packing Company issued a recall on 38,000 pounds of pork sausage Thursday after learning that pieces of plastic, likely from worker's gloves, were embedded in the product, the Associated Press reported.

According to the U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service, the products affected by the Smithfield, Va.-based company recall are 1-pound chubs of "Gwaltney mild pork sausage roll" with a use-by date of Mar. 12, 2013, and cases containing chubs of "Gwaltney mild pork sausage roll" with a case code of 78533109741.

The sausage in question was produced on Jan. 11 and has already been shipped to food stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, and the District of Columbia.

The recall, which the USDA considered a Class II low-health risk, was issued after two consumer complaints alerted the company of the issue, the AP reported. There have been no reports of injury.

Thirteen recalls have been issued by the USDA since the start of 2013. Except for one – a California pizza product – all were meat products, the majority of which were poultry.

Consumers in possession of the recalled Smithfield pork should call (877) 933-4625.
