Zandi: JPMorgan’s Dimon Would be ‘Fabulous’ Treasury Chief

By    |   Friday, 01 Jul 2011 02:35 PM

Not too many people in the financial community are talking about JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon as a possible replacement for Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, who has hinted he may not serve out his term. But Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody’s Analytics, gives Dimon a ringing endorsement.

In light of the government bailouts for banks like JPMorgan, “you’d hear some howls from some folks,” if Dimon was named to the post, Zandi tells Yahoo Ticker.

“But I think he’d be a fabulous treasury secretary.”

Zandi said he also thinks highly of the others who have been mentioned as possible replacements for Geithner, including Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Janet Yellen, Roger Altman, chairman of boutique investment bank Evercore Partners; and FDIC Chairman Sheila Bair.

“They would all be good,” he said.

Zandi, who advised John McCain in the 2008 presidential race and is a registered Democrat, lauded Geithner’s performance. “I think he’s done an excellent job, beginning with the bank stress tests in early 2009,” he said.

“Not everything has worked out exactly as he would have liked – housing policy is perhaps the best example. But taking it all together, I think he’s done a very good job.”

Not everyone shares Zandi’s enthusiasm for Dimon.

JPMorgan’s need for a bailout like other banks in 2008-09 “shows Mr. Dimon is no capitalist colossus astride the Isle of Manhattan, but one of the great welfare queens in America,” writes Jesse Eisenger of ProPublica.
