Yellen Met With Shelby in May as Senate Panel Weighed Fed Bill

Monday, 06 Jul 2015 06:35 PM

Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen met with Alabama Republican Senator Richard Shelby after he penned legislation that would require stricter oversight of the central bank, her calendar for May shows.

Yellen spoke with Shelby by phone on May 19 and May 20, the schedule shows. That was a week after the Senate Banking Committee chairman revealed the contents of a bill that, among other things, would create a commission to make recommendations on restructuring the central bank system. The phone calls came just before the committee vetted the proposal on May 21.

Yellen talked with Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio, the senior Democrat on the Senate banking panel, by phone on May 15.

The calendars, provided to Bloomberg in response to a Freedom of Information Act request, also show that the central bank chief talked on the phone with Massachusetts Democrat Senator Elizabeth Warren on May 7. Warren and Senator David Vitter of Louisiana that day introduced legislation to require the Federal Reserve Board of Governors to publicly record votes on enforcement actions that include $1 million or more in payments.

Yellen met for breakfast on May 20 with Republican Representative Sean Duffy of Wisconsin, who heads the House Financial Services Committee’s investigative subcommittee, having talked with him by phone on May 13. The committee has pressed her for more information about a probe of a 2012 leak of confidential Fed monetary policy deliberations.
