WSJ: Billions Lost in Redundant Government Spending

Tuesday, 01 Mar 2011 10:30 AM

Billions of dollars are lost to redundant government spending, including funding for 15 agencies overseeing food-safety laws, more than 20 homeless assistance programs and 80 programs for economic development, according to the Government Accountability Office.

Sen. Tom Coburn (R., Okla.), who pushed for the report, estimates duplicative spending to run between $100 billion and $200 billion, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The General Accountability Office did not specific a figure on total spending overlap.

Lawmakers will review the findings to determine spending cuts and consolidation.

"Reducing or eliminating duplication, overlap, or fragmentation could potentially save billions of tax dollars annually and help agencies provide more efficient and effective services," according to the report obtained by the Journal.

The findings identify 82 federal programs to improve teacher quality, 80 to help the disadvantaged with transportation, 47 for job training and employment and 56 to help people understand finance.

Public spending has grabbed headlines recently, as the Obama administration has expressed willingness to work with Republicans to help narrow the country's gaping fiscal deficit.

Both parties are working to agree on a spending plan to avoid shutting down the government.

Republican House leaders recently unveiled a stopgap spending measure that would cut $4 billion dollars by reducing or scrapping programs.

Democrats appear to like it.

"For the sake of our people and our economy, we cannot allow gridlock to prevail," says President Barack Obama, according to the AFP newswire.
