Technology companies need to take responsibility for the "chaos" they create, Apple CEO Tim Cook said Sunday at a Stanford University commencement address, The Hill reported.

Digital surveillance threatens innovation and would have “stopped Silicon Valley before it got started,” he warned, according to CNBC.

“If we accept as normal and unavoidable that everything in our lives can be aggregated, sold and even leaked in the event of a hack, then we lose so much more than data. We lose the freedom to be human.”

Cook also said that lately, “this industry is becoming better known for a less noble innovation – the belief you can claim credit without accepting responsibility,” according to The Hill.

“We see it every day now with every data breach, every privacy violation, every blind eye turned to hate speech, fake news poisoning out national conversation, the false miracles in exchange for a single drop of your blood.”

Cook stressed that, "too many seem to think that good intentions excuse away harmful outcomes, but... what you build and what you create define who you are," adding that “if you built a chaos factory, you can’t dodge responsibility for the chaos.”

The result of this type of environment is that ideas become stifled, leading to a situation where the imagination that created the tech industry itself can be suppressed, Cook said, according to Deadline.

“In a world without digital privacy, even if you’ve done nothing wrong other than think differently, you begin to censor yourself,” Cook said. “Not entirely at first, just a little. Bit by bit. To risk less, to hope less, to imagine less, to dare less, to create less, to try less, to talk less, to think less.”
