More than 60 percent of Americans say corporations and the rich are paying too little in federal taxes, a Gallup poll reveals.

Here is how the survey breaks down:

  • Sixty-seven percent of those polled say corporations are not paying enough in taxes, compared to 19 percent who say they are paying their fair share and 9 percent who believe they are paying too much.
  • Sixty-three percent say upper-income people are paying too little, while 24 percent say they are paying their fair share and 10 percent who believe they are paying too much.
  • Fifty-one percent say the middle class is paying too much, compared to 40 percent who say they are paying their fair share and 6 percent who believe they are paying too little.
  • Forty-eight percent say low-income earners are paying too much. Another 35 percent say they are paying their fair share, while 14 percent say they are not paying enough.

"These findings provide insight into Americans' basic beliefs about the tax system at a time when tax reform is a major item on the legislative agenda," Gallup said in its survey report. "Clearly some Americans are dissatisfied with the tax system, both in terms of their perception of what others pay, and in terms of their assessments of their own tax situation."
