CNBC Poll: Obama's Economic Approval Rating Drops to Record Low

By    |   Tuesday, 07 October 2014 10:02 AM

Americans apparently think no better of President Obama's economic policies than they do about the rest of his agenda.

Only 24 percent of Americans say they are extremely or quite confident in Obama's economic policies, according to CNBC's All-America Economic survey. That's a record low for his presidential tenure and down from 33 percent when the question was last asked in June 2013.

Meanwhile, 74 percent of the 805 respondents in the Sept. 25 to 28 survey say they are not at all or somewhat confident in the president's economic policies. Specifically, 44 percent of the respondents say they have no confidence at all in the president's stewardship of the economy, which tied with the prior record high of August 2012.

Even among Democrats, only 45 percent say they are extremely or quite confident in the president on economic policy.

The only bright spot for Obama is that the ratings for Republicans in Congress are even worse. Only 11 percent of those polled are extremely or quite confident in congressional Republicans' economic policies, compared with 16 percent for congressional Democrats.

A total of 79 percent of the respondents view the economy as fair or poor, down from 84 percent a year ago, while those rating the economy as excellent or good rose 3 points.

Even those who are doing well are not confident in Obama's economic policies. A little more than a fourth of those with at least $50,000 in the stock market have high confidence in the president's economic policies even though the market has risen 144 percent during his presidency.

The bleak views on economic policy and the economy's health come despite recent signs of strength in the economy. GDP grew 4.6 percent in the second quarter, and the September jobs report was stronger than expected.

But problems lurk beneath the surface. Income inequality is growing, the labor-force participation rate dropped to a 36-year low last month and wage gains are barely exceeding inflation.

As for Obama, his daily overall approval rating is only 44 percent, according to Gallup.
