In a speech stressing themes of going beyond one’s full potential and the importance of recognition, Yum Brands, Inc. co-founder and retired chairman and CEO David Novak said "leaders cast a long shadow." Because they do so, they must consistently "use the awesome power of recognition," especially if they hope to attract and retain committed, loyal talent to their organizations. The retired CEO says the most important leadership tools are two words, "Thank you." During his chairmanship Yum brands grew to just over 40,000 restaurants.

Yum is the parent company of restaurant-retail powerhouses like KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell. Novak also emphasized, "Never underestimate what you have the capacity to do, believe me you never know what you’re capable of."

The 64 year old retired entrepreneur gave his remarks at the annual American Free Enterprise Day at Florida’s Palm Beach Atlantic University. The event honors local and national business leaders for their work and philanthropy.

At one point during his talk, the widely-recognized business leader displayed awards he would frequently give to individual members of his management teams. These included rubber chickens, large plastic pizza slices, and large simulated Taco Bell sauce packets — each filled with between $100 to $300.

Novak is the author of the book, The New York Times bestseller, "Taking People With You."
