Top White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow on Sunday denied negotiations on the North American Free Trade Agreement have broken down, saying, however, President Donald Trump “is right” to “stand up for U.S. interests.”

In an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” Kudlow said “good faith negotiations are welcome.”

“The NAFTA talks haven't broken down,” he said. “We're still having those conversations and we are still having the steel talks with Canada… I don't think things are broken down.”

“I don't want to be cavalier about anything,” he continued. “These are very serious matters, could affect the economy. There's worries about that every place. I don't want to deny that. But I do want to say this. If you cannot abide by the rules — that's the thing. In the world trade game rule breaking is all over the place. That's why I think that the president is right. We have got to make reforms and we have to stand up for U.S. interests as we go along.”

Kudlow also dismissed the furor over Trump’s Friday tweet ahead of a good jobs report.

“If you put the number out, that would have been a much more difficult proposition,” he said, adding: “That's a harmless tweet. Stock market futures by the way did nothing — two basic points. Come on.”
