Facebook May Charge to Ensure Friends See Postings

Got a witty, insightful comment to post on your Facebook that you know your friends can't live without? Facebook is rolling out a new service that will make sure your friends see your post.

Enter Highlight, which won't be free, of course, as the iconic social network looks for fresh revenue channels.

Already in play in New Zealand, Highlight makes sure your posts don't get lost in the news feed for about $1.50 a post by pushing the comment on a user's friends.

It probably won't be too popular, some experts warn.

"If you want to be certain that your friends see something you have to say, why not just send them an email? Because charging you to ensure that your friends see your posts seems just like Facebook trying to charge you $1.50 per email," blogger Henry Blodget reports.

"We realize email is for dinosaurs (like us). But come on. $1.50 per post? That's 5X more than the cost of a physical letter!"

Facebook is going public, and with hundreds of millions of users, Wall Street is taking notice.

But the iconic social network must continue to find ways to drum up revenue, a challenge for any company, and some a worry turnout at the initial public offering will be so heavy due to the hype that prices will fall when the dust settles.

"The market will try to figure out the right price for the stock and it's going to open really high," says Reena Aggarwal, a professor of business administration and finance at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business in Washington, according to Reuters.

"There are lots of risks — the company is high growth but also high risk, and there is a lot of uncertainty, so retail investors have to be careful."
