Liberty Advisor Group fired an employee who mocked the widow of a Navy SEAL being acknowledged by President Donald Trump during his address to a joint session of Congress.

Daniel Grilo, who had been a principal at the Chicago consulting firm, on Tuesday sent a tweet during the president’s speech that said, "Sorry Owens' wife, you're not helping yourself or your husband's memory by standing there and clapping like an idiot. Trump just used you."

The Twitter message referred to Carryn Owens, whose husband, Navy SEAL William “Ryan” Owens in January was killed during a raid that targeted an al-Qaeda stronghold in Yemen, according to the Chicago Tribune. She cried as Trump praised her husband’s sacrifice and the audience applauded.

Twitter and social networks such as 4chan and Reddit were soon alight with remarks condemning Grilo’s comment. He later apologized, but the damage was done.

“Last night during President Trump’s speech, a Liberty Advisor Group employee sent out an offensive and inappropriate tweet regarding the Gold Star family that was being rightly honored before Congress and the Nation,” the firm said in a statement on its website. “The personal views of this individual do not represent Liberty and we vigorously disavow them.”

The firm deleted Grilo’s profile from its website. Grilo's Twitter account, which identified him as a supporter of Hillary Clinton, also was shut down.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Trump called Carryn Owens on Jan. 30 and invited her and her three children to attend the speech, according to the Associated Press.

Spicer shrugged off criticism that the president used Carryn Owens as a propaganda tool, saying she accepted the invitation and has the right to honor her husband's legacy.

"If that's the criticism that people have, they have a right to it in this country," Spicer said. "But I would also suggest that we have a right to honor the sacrifice that [Owens] made."

During the campaign, Trump had a well publicized feud with Khizr Khan and his wife, the Muslim parents of a U.S. soldier killed in action. The Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia featured them as speakers to criticize Trump's proposal to temporarily ban Muslim immigrants.
