A key economic adviser in the Trump administration is stepping down from his post in the White House at the end of the month, an inside official told Politico.
Tomas Philipson, the acting chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers(WHCEA), started in July 2019 following a two-year stint on a three-person council for President Donald Trump.
Kevin Hassett, the former council chairman, recently announced he will also be departing the White House soon. He rejoined the administration to advise the president on how to handle the economic hit brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. He served as chairman of the WHCEA between 2017 and 2019.
During an interview with the Washington Post, Hassett said of the economy moving forward, “I think everyone should be worried about how this is going to turn out in the end, because it’s a shock unlike anything we’ve ever seen"
The departures of Philipson and Hassett are expected to leave the president with fewer economic minds within the White House, putting more of the burden on national economic director Larry Kudlow and White House trade adviser Peter Navarro.
This comes as the administration is beginning to talk about another stimulus package and dealing with sagging job numbers. The country's current unemployment rate is 13.3%
