Arizona Iced Tea: Don't Boycott Us!

Wednesday, 28 Apr 2010 09:35 PM

A call to boycott Arizona products in response to the state's controversial crackdown on illegal immigrants has ensnared Arizona Iced Tea -- a product that happens to be brewed in New York.

The Arizona Beverage Company, which makes Arizona Iced Tea, is based in Woodbury, New York. Its tea was targeted on the social networking site Twitter as part of a national effort to boycott Arizona products, New York's Daily News reported.

"The can and the bottle may say Arizona, but the content on the inside is made by New Yorkers," said New York state Senator Craig Johnson, who has been trying to draw attention to the misunderstanding.

A representative from the company was not immediately available for comment.

Opponents of the Arizona law are encouraging consumers in a campaign started on the Internet to boycott Arizona products on grounds the measure requires state and local police to determine people's immigration status if there is "reasonable suspicion" they are undocumented.

Critics say the law, signed last week by Arizona's governor, is unconstitutional and opens the door to racial profiling.

Protest rallies are being planned for this weekend across the United States.
