But in spite of how it happens, you have most likely experienced it. Sure, working all the time can be rewarding, but this should not be done at the expense of your health. And although you may not have any power over the causes of your work stress, you do have power over how you respond.

Studies have shown that poor physical working environment, high and insufficient workloads and exposure to hazardous substances are key factors that cause stress.

Luckily, there are better ways to go about this. If you want to manage stress efficiently, you need to address three core areas of your life, that is, your physical health, mental well-being and sense of purpose.

Here are some stress-relieving tips:

1. Decompress Your Body

Given the complexities of the modern life, you spend far more time engaging your body’s stress response that you do engaging your relaxation response. This affects your physical health adversely since too much stress undermines your immune system and quickens your aging process. And considering that stress is a physical and hormonal chain reaction, the first thing you should do is to interrupt your body’s stress response system.

Here are some of the best ways to de-stress your life:

  • Eat Whole Foods

Consuming too much of the processed foods can cause you to feel nervous. It can even contribute to attention-deficit disorde (ADD). Thankfully, this is a problem that can be corrected by increasing your intake of whole foods as well as vegetables and fruits.

Try getting a substantial amount of omega 3 fatty-acids from seeds of chia, flax and hemp. Taking more whole foods provides the nutrients you need to take on the challenges you face at work.

  • Exercise on a Regular Basis

In addition to a healthy diet, engaging in physical activities boosts the release of the feel good or the stress relieving hormones. If you feel your stress level is increasing, try moving around, running, dancing or simply stretching.

2. Unwind Your Mind

Most people believe stress to be the events that occur to them. But in reality, stress is merely an individual’s response to such external elements. It means that stress is a reaction, arising from your autonomic nervous system, and one that is activated by a thought or belief.

Stress starts in your mind, through a thought or belief. Consequently, a crucial step in neutralizing stress entails fueling your mind with positive thoughts.

It is a fact of life that things won’t always turn out as you’d expected or planned. But instead of focusing on what went wrong with your work presentation, you should learn to appreciate the few projects that succeed. Every evening, spare a few minutes and jot down three things, which you are grateful for with regards to your career or job.

  • Meditating

Meditating, even if it’s for a brief period, will go a long way in de-stressing your mind. Apart from lowering your blood pressure, meditation teaches you how to control your thoughts. This way, you can avoid those thoughts that trigger work-related stress. So the next time your grumpy boss dumps a new task on your desk, sit back, take a deep breath and meditate for five minutes.

  • Learning to Say 'No'

One of the main culprits for work stress is getting overworked and overcommitted. Most people feel obligated to say yes to their supervisors and employers because of the fear of not being liked. But did you know that saying no is one of the biggest steps to relieving stress. You can always be polite but firm in your decision. Explain that you are overbooked and that taking up any more projects will only lower the quality of work you deliver.

  • Scheduling Quality time for Socializing

If you work round-the-clock, finding time to spend with loved ones can be challenging. But regardless of how busy you are, you should spare a couple of hours to relax and check in with your family or close friends. During this time, you should avoid talking about work, checking work mails or engaging in any other work-related activity.

  • Be Creative

Remember how much fun you were having when you enrolled for those dance or piano lessons? You probably stopped because you became too busy or felt that you weren’t getting any better at the art. However, it’s crucial that you carve out some time to engage in creative activities. This can be as simple as learning how to prepare yummy meals or handwriting a letter to a friend.
