WalletHub: Sioux Falls Tops List for Wallet Wellness

Sioux Falls, S.D., placed first in a ranking of the nation's 150 biggest cities for "wallet wellness," which was created by personal finance website WalletHub.

Wallet wellness gauges the connection between physical, financial and emotional health. The ranking is based on eight statistics:

• Median household income, adjusted for cost of living.

• Home affordability, as measured by median household income divided by the median home price.

• Rank in WalletHub’s Best & Worst Cities for Job Seekers Report.

• Economic mobility.

• Average commute time.

• Average credit score.

• A well-being index that measures the overall mental state of a city's residents.

• Physical health.

Sioux Falls was followed in the ranking by Bakersfield, Calif.; Lincoln, Nebr.; Corpus Christi, Texas; and Omaha, Nebr.

Baton Rouge, La. came in last place, preceded by New Orleans; Jackson, Miss.; Cincinnati; and Birmingham, Ala.

Plano, Texas, headed the list for median household income (adjusted for cost of living) at $83,500, followed by Gilbert, Ariz., at $74,700; Overland Park, Kan., at $72,000; Chandler, Ariz., at $69,900; and Fremont, Calif., at $67,400.

Meanwhile, Money Magazine, in its 2013 ranking of the best small towns to live in, placed Sharon, Mass., first, followed by Louisville, Colo.; Vienna, Va.; Chanhassen, Minn.; and Sherwood, Ore.

Money's top-earning towns began with Scarsdale, N.Y., at a median family income of $292,000, followed by Weston, Conn., at $275,000; Hillsborough, Calif., at $262,000; Potomac, Md., at $239,000; and New Canaan, Conn., at $237,000.
