Telemarketers Kept 62 Percent of Charity Donations, NY Says

Thursday, 27 Feb 2014 12:50 PM

For-profit telemarketers operating in New York kept 62 percent of the $249 million in charitable donations they raised in 2012, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s office said in a report on charity fundraising that may lead to further investigations.

The report released today showed that in 78 percent of 589 campaigns, charities received less than half of the funds raised. In 15 percent of the campaigns, charities actually lost money on the telemarketing effort, according to the report.

For-profit fundraisers used by nonprofits are tracked by Schneiderman’s office, which produces an annual “Pennies for Charities” report.

The report has served as a basis for investigations into charity fundraising in the past. The state said it expects more probes to follow this year’s as well.

“New Yorkers who open their hearts and wallets deserve to know how their hard-earned dollars are being spent and how much of their money is going to pay telemarketers’ salaries and costs,” Schneiderman said in a statement.

One telemarketing company, InfoCision Inc., based in Akron, Ohio, was involved in 40 campaigns, raising $43.7 million, with 38 percent going to charities in 2012, according to the report. The company raised money for groups including the March of Dimes Foundation, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Inc., the American Diabetes Association and the National Rifle Association of America, according to the report.

A spokeswoman for InfoCision, Samantha Wells, didn’t immediately respond to a call and e-mail seeking comment on the report.
