Small Business: 6 Lessons From an NBA Team's Historic Season

So you’d naturally think that an NBA team’s record-book accomplishment for regular-season wins would offer little or nothing in terms of lessons for a small-business owner, right?

Wrong.

The Golden State Warriors drubbed the Memphis Grizzlies 125-104 to win their 73rd game of the regular season and become the all-time winningest team for one season, besting the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls by one victory.

USA Today recently reported that American Express hosted a panel to discuss what small business can learn about technology from the Warriors.

From it, 6 tips the Warriors can teach your small business:
  • Use the technology your customers want.
  • Connect with your customers through tech.
  • Keep it simple.
  • Abandon outdated technologies, even if you’ve made significant investments.
  • Tech is part of everything a business does.
  • Be on the lookout for new payment methods.

Tech entrepreneur Kevin Anderson, co-founder of Appetize, an app enabling fans at sporting events to order food without leaving their seats, explained businesses need to focus on simple experiences with technology.

“At first, we tried to be all things … We learned to focus on just our core functionality,” he said. “Finding the right technology partner is key. You want to know they are reputable, have clients like you, are going to stick around,” he told USA Today.

“You don’t have to go big from day one. Keep it simple, roll it out slowly,” said Daniel Brusilovsky, digital initiatives lead of the Oakland, Calif.-based Warriors.

“You have to figure out what the customer wants and provide it,” Steve Sarver, founder and chief executive officer of the San Francisco Soup Company.

To be sure, the desire to always learn something new is a key attribute for the successful small-business owner.

“Some of the most successful people are self-educated,”  says David Rohlander, author of "The CEO Code: Create a Great Company and Inspire People to Greatness With Practical Advice From an Experienced Executive."

What matters more is building the habit of learning, in whatever format works for you. “You never arrive,” he says. “You’re continually trying to improve.”
