Kudlow: Trump Administration to Continue Eviction Protections

The Senate Republicans' next coronavirus relief bill will include another round of $1,200 stimulus checks, and the Trump administration will extend the federal eviction moratorium, which over the past four months has kept millions of renters in their homes, White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow said Sunday.

"There's a $1,200 check coming that's part of the new package," Kudlow said on CNN's "State of the Union." "I would have preferred a payroll tax on top of that check, but be that as it may, politically it doesn't work, but the check is there. The reemployment bonus is there. The retention bonus is there. Tax credits for small businesses and restaurants and all are going to be there."

Show host Jake Tapper commented that people will "need that money" as soon as possible, as they are "worried about being evicted in days, literally."

"We'll lengthen the eviction," Kudlow responded, prompting "oh, that's good news!" from Tapper.

The measures will provide a "great safety net" until the economy gets "a strong recovery," said Kudlow.

The moratorium covers renters living in buildings where mortgages are backed by the government, but lawmakers are also calling for a nationwide eviction ban and rent cancellations.

Meanwhile, the bill calls for replacing a $600 weekly supplement for state unemployment checks, which ended Saturday, with a provision that caps unemployment benefits on a 70% wage replacement. Kudlow called the replacement plan “quite generous by any standard.”

Kudlow also on Sunday said he remains confident that the U.S. economy will recover, telling Tapper that "the odds favor a big increase in job creation and a big reduction in unemployment."

"I think that there's a bunch of indicators," said Kudlow. "You're in a housing boom right now. You're in a retail sales boom right now. You're in an auto, car boom right now. Manufacturing...all are booming. New business applications are skyrocketing.

In some "spiking hotspots," the recovery does remain slow, he acknowledged, but the overall numbers for July aren't out.

"On the whole, the picture is very positive and I still think the V-shaped recovery is in place and I still think there's going to be 20% growth rate in the third and fourth quarters."
