Gallup's Job Creation Index Near 6-Year High in April

By    |   Thursday, 08 May 2014 08:43 AM

Gallup's U.S. Job Creation Index rose to 25 in April, up from 23 in March and only 1 point below the record high set in January 2008, when the index began.

The index represents the percentage of workers reporting hiring by their employers minus the percentage of those reporting layoffs.

In April, 39 percent of the more than 16,000 full- and part-time workers surveyed said their companies are expanding payrolls, while 14 percent said their employers are shrinking payrolls. A total of 41 percent said their companies are leaving workforce levels unchanged.

The index hit it record low of -5 in February and April 2009.

Nongovernment job creation increased to 28 in April, from 26 in March and is the highest Gallup has recorded since it began asking about government versus nongovernment work in August 2008. Government job creation — based on reports from those who identify their place of employment as local, state, or federal government — was 12, similar to the 13 recorded the last two months.

The government's measure of job creation is on the rise too. Non-farm payrolls have risen by more than 200,000 in each of the three months through April, including a 288,000 increase that month.

"The recent rise in employee reports of hiring is a positive sign that the economic slowdown may be ending," Gallup's Rebecca Riffkin wrote. "More companies may be doing better than in recent years and thus are looking to increase the size of their workforces."

Many economists voiced enthusiasm after last week's news of the April payroll increase and a drop in the unemployment rate to a 5 ½ year low of 6.3 percent last month.

"The economy is gathering momentum after the bad winter," Michael Gapen, senior U.S. economist at Barclays, told Bloomberg. "It's a very balanced number in the sense that we got it [job growth] in goods as well as services."
