Oracle CEO Lawrence Ellison placed first in a corporate compensation ranking for 2013, garnering $78.4 million.

The list was compiled by Equilar for The New York Times. It includes CEOs for the 100 largest publicly traded U.S. companies, based on revenue, that filed proxies by April 4. The compensation includes salary, bonuses, stock and option awards and other compensation.

Walt Disney's Robert Iger came in second at $34.3 million, followed by Rupert Murdoch of 21st Century Fox at $26.1 million, Honeywell International's David Cote at $25.4 million and David Farr of Emerson Electric at $25.3 million.

The median pay for the 100 CEOs on the list totaled $13.9 million, up 9 percent from 2012.

Some economists say the lofty CEO salaries are primarily responsible for the increase in income inequality. "The system is pretty much out of control in many ways," Thomas Piketty of the Paris School of Economics, told The Times.

When it comes to perks for executives, some companies are cutting back on benefits such as private jet use, The Associated Press reports. But companies are increasing other perks, such as financial planning, to compensate.

"Companies are really digging in on identifying what areas it makes sense to focus their benefits programs," Robert Newbury, director at compensation consulting firm Towers Watson, told AP. "You will see companies spend less on areas that raise red flags with investors."
