America's Legacy of Hope Undermined by Obama's Ego Quest

America's Legacy of Hope Undermined by Obama's Ego Quest

If you follow the news, it’s easy to conclude that President Barack Obama is more interested in building his own legacy than meeting the needs of the average American.

Over the past 6+ years, he has pushed through decisions and regulations that are unpopular with the majority of Americans.

The poster child is Obama’s energy policy where he hopes his legacy will make him “Emperor of the Environment.”

The proposed goal is to reduce power sector carbon emissions by 32 percent by 2030.

This is the perfect example of a policy that is out of touch with reality. It is impossible for energy companies to meet this standard, and the Obama administration knows it.

But he can keep his legacy intact by taking credit for his unattainable policy, while dropping it into the lap of the administrations that follows him.

His war on coal will cost hundreds of thousands of lost jobs and $1.47 trillion of lost national income by 2030. Electricity prices will rise by 20 percent, putting even more pressure on families struggling to get by.

A National Review survey about energy issues found more than two in five Americans (43 percent) think that rising energy prices were the most important energy issue facing our country; another quarter say that our domestic production is too low.

Far fewer are worried about the renewable-energy agenda driving this administration’s approach.

Their conclusion? “Clearly, on energy policy, the White House is not in synch with the American public.”

A more appropriate legacy would be American energy independence which can be accomplished if we would be allowed to develop our own energy resources. An economic boom would follow, our manufacturers would have more affordable energy and our people would have good paying jobs.

Meanwhile, as the champion of the minimum wage, Obama seeks to endear himself with unskilled, low paid workers, a legacy milestone that he embraces, despite the calculations from most economists that when large minimum wage increases are forced on employers, employment decreases more than the increase in wages and thereby overall earnings are reduced. This limits the tax base that pays for our schools, highways and hospitals.

Other opponents of minimum wage believe that it can cause price inflation as businesses must raise their prices to accommodate the higher wages. Those that lost their jobs because of the minimum wage increases now have to pay more for goods and services, with zero income. How ironic is that?

Does this faze the Obama administration? Not at all. Yet again, he puts into place economic policies that the leaders following him will have to grapple with. Workers will be displaced, hours cut and Obama will not be around to take the heat for the mess he created.

Let’s deal with the ultimate Obama legacy move: immigration. Obama is all for allowing 11 million illegal immigrants to remain in the country. Obama has no problem basking in the adulation of being crowned as “Inmigración Rey” (King of Immigration).

The Washington Post, quoting an exhaustive study by the Heritage Foundation has found that after amnesty, current unlawful immigrants would receive $9.4 trillion in government benefits and services and pay just $3 trillion in taxes over their lifetimes. That leaves a net fiscal deficit (benefits minus taxes) of $6.3 trillion. That deficit would have to be financed by increasing the government debt or raising taxes on U.S. citizens.

Obama’s legacy will prosper. The rest of the nation will suffer. And once again, those that follow Obama will be stuck with the $9.4 trillion bill.

We need a president that thinks more about us, and less about himself.
