1. Wyoming
Wyoming tops Bankrate's list of best states to retire. The state boasts the lowest tax rate in the country at 6.9 percent, along with the fifth-lowest crime and a low cost of living.

2. Colorado
Colorado follows at Bankrate's No. 2 spot, chiefly because of its relatively mild winters and get-outdoors-and-explore culture, with plenty of wide-open Rocky Mountain spaces. Home prices there are rising with the average home at $293,300, according to CNN Money.

3. Utah
Utah is a freedom lover's paradise, with plenty of places to explore and enjoy nature as well as solid health care and a low cost of living, Bankrate noted.

4. Hawaii
Topping MoneyRates.com's list of best state's to retire, Hawaii earned plaudits for its balmy weather and high life expectancy.

5. Idaho
Idaho, with a low-density population and few large cities, features a low crime rate and also a thriving economy, making it a draw for retirees who like mountains and an easy-going way of life, the AARP noted.

6. Arizona
A golfer's paradise, with plenty of upscale courses, Arizona also marks a top spot on the AARP's list for retirees. As with Hawaii, the weather is warm and dry, and with the climate, life-expectantly high.
