NEFE focuses on helping people, including those who are underserved, to improve their financial knowledge and put that into action in their lives. The organization has outreach programs across the lifespan, working with elementary-age school students, to young families, to those seniors moving into retirement.

NEFE acts as a research hub, funds research on personal finance, offers consumer financial education, and partners with other groups to reach specific audiences.

The foundation, located in Greenwood Village, Colorado, operates as a private, nonprofit 501(c) (3) independently funded through an endowment that "operates as a noncommercial entity free from financial ties and other organizations."
