NEFE focuses on helping people, including those who are underserved, to improve their financial knowledge and put that into action in their lives. The organization has outreach programs across the lifespan, working with elementary-age school students, to young families, to those seniors moving into retirement.
NEFE acts as a research hub, funds research on personal finance, offers consumer financial education, and partners with other groups to reach specific audiences.

The foundation, located in Greenwood Village, Colorado, operates as a private, nonprofit 501(c) (3) independently funded through an endowment that "operates as a noncommercial entity free from financial ties and other organizations." It has a 13-member volunteer board of trustees with backgrounds in law, higher education and financial services.
The organization's president and CEO is Ted Beck. He joined NEFE in 2005 after serving as associate dean of executive education and corporate relations at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Business. Beck also served as an advisory committee member of the FDIC
