4 Most Popular Gold Investments

By    |   Sunday, 12 July 2015 10:23 AM

Those investors committed to entering the gold market typically kick off their portfolios in four ways, all with varied pros and cons related to risk and also lifestyle.

Here are four popular gold investments.

1. Gold coins and bullion
Demand remains high in the United States for gold coins, even as some suggest they are hawked by television markets with a script loaded with fear of currency crashes. Still, coins like Maple Leafs and American Eagles, which come from the national mints in Canada and The United States, mark an easy way for small investors to dabble in the market. For owners of bullion, especially, storage space and safety remain concerns, U.S. News & World Report noted.

2. ETFs
Those who don't want to own physical gold can join ETFs (exchange-traded funds), purchasing as few as one share of a gold fund, which is a basket of securities that gets traded like stocks. ETFs, according to the website Investopedia, are bought and sold daily, and retain high liquidity. Related annual costs for holding gold ETFs also remains cheap, investment advisers note.

3. Gold mine stocks
Some investors choose to invest in gold mining company stocks. Those have dipped in recent years amid production concerns, global demand and political strife in certain areas of the world. During the last month, according to the website 247WallSt.com, gold mining stocks have enjoyed a resurgence, prompting some to revisit their potential outlook.

4. Gold jewelry
The world loves gold jewelry, and many consumers choose such purchases as investment pieces, even as retail mark-ups can outpace worth. Still, gold jewelry, noted the World Gold Council, amounted to more than half of the world's demand for gold in 2014. U.S. demand for gold jewelry came in third behind China and India, it said.
