By    |   Tuesday, 30 June 2015 10:37 PM

China, Russia, Australia and the United States lead the world in gold production, according to Mineweb.com. The world’s top gold mining companies have seen ups and downs in the gold market in recent years.

Here are eight of the top gold mining companies in the world, according to Mineweb.com and the annual Gold Fields Mineral Services Ltd (GFMS) survey published by Thomson Reuters.

1. Barrick
Headquartered in Toronto, and with operations on four continents, Mineweb.com called Barrick the heavyweight champ of global gold mining, even as its output fell by 13 percent in 2014 to 6.2 million ounces, according to the annual GFMS survey.

2. Newmont
Colorado-based Newmont was founded in 1921 and GFMS ranks the company second behind Barrick for worldwide gold production in 2014, with 4.8 million ounces. As with Barrick, the North American home office oversees mining operations all the way to the South Pacific.

3. AngloGold Ashanti
With 20 gold mining operations in 10 countries, AngloGold of Johannesburg, South Africa is the largest gold mining company based on the African continent, and GFMS reports its output rose in 2014. In another indication of the industry's global character, one subsidiary is the Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company based in Victor, Colorado.

4. Goldcorp
The Vancouver, Canada, company is more regional — if by region you mean hemisphere. Its active mines and exploration sites span North and South America, from Canada's Kenoria Distrct in Ontario, near the Hudson Bay, to Argentina's southerly Santa Cruz Province.

5. Kinross
Owner and operator of Fort Knox — the Alaska gold mine, not the U.S. government gold repository in Kentucky — Canada-based Kinross has operating mines and development projects from Russia to Chile to Ghana.

6. Navoi
Named for the city in Uzbekistan it calls home, this is the world's largest state-owned mining company, producing 2.3 million ounces of gold in 2014 according to GFMS.

7. Newcrest
Australia-based Newcrest operates mines in four countries with a global workforce of 10,000 people and is noted for a productive mine on a volcanic island, Lihir, of Papua, New Guinea.

8. Gold Fields
Another of the South Africa-based global leaders in gold mining, Gold Fields operates eight mines in Africa, South America and Australia, and GFMS reports the company boosted its gold output in 2014 by 8 percent, to 2 million ounces.
