5 Facts About Ben Bernanke You Probably Didn't Know

Ben Bernanke served two terms as chairman of the Federal Reserve, from 2006 to 2014, and oversaw the Fed's response to the 2008 financial crisis.

After leaving his post with the Federal Reserve, Bernanke joined the Economics Studies program at the Brookings Institution as a Distinguished Fellow in Residence.

Among his many accomplishments, here are five lesser-known facts about Bernanke.

1. Bernanke was a gifted young student. He learned to read in kindergarten and won the Dillon County (South Carolina) Spelling Bee at age 12.



According to Time, he won the state spelling bee, but was eliminated at national competition when he misspelled "edelweiss."

2. He taught himself calculus, since his high school didn't offer the course, and scored a 1590 out of 1600 on the SAT, according to U.S. News and World Report.

3. Bernanke spent his summers away from Harvard working as a waiter in a Mexican restaurant at the famed Interstate 95 tourist spot, "South of the Border," which sits between North Carolina and South Carolina, according to Minyanville.

The Mexican-themed roadside attraction also features an amusement park and a mascot named Pedro.

4. Bernanke learned Hebrew from his maternal grandfather, Harold Friedman, and officiated at the bar and bat mitzvahs of his children, Joel and Alyssa, without the aid of a rabbi, according to U.S. News.

5. For his role in helping the country out of the financial crisis, Bernanke was named Time magazine's "Man of the Year" in 2009.
